Everything You Need to Know About CBN and Sleep Support
While CBD continues to rise in popularity thanks to an increase in studies and consumer demand, CBD’s cannabinoid cousin, CBN still remains a mystery to many. While CBN has been touted as a sleep aid, more human studies are needed to confirm this claim. So what can we tell you about CBN? We’ll explain what it is, how it’s created, and explore some possible benefits.
What is CBN?
Cannabinol (CBN) is just one of the more than 100 cannabinoids found in hemp, making up a small fraction of the cannabinoid profile in live hemp plants. The amount of naturally occurring CBN in hemp only increases after the plant is harvested and stored for long periods of time. Why, you ask? This is because THC in the hemp plant slowly turns into CBN as it is exposed to heat, sunlight, and oxygen.
What does CBN do?
CBN appears to bind with both CB1 receptors (usually found in your central nervous system), and CB2 receptors (found in your peripheral nervous system), in the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system, first identified by researchers in the 1990s, is known to play a part in regulating our mood, appetite, sleep, memory and more.
Since CBN starts out as THC, it has some of the same effects as THC, including deep relaxation. However, with a much weaker ability to bind to receptors in the central nervous system than THC, CBN is minimally psychoactive so you won’t feel the same “high” as you do with THC.
CBN is said to contribute to the Entourage Effect, meaning CBN works in unity with other compounds, such as CBD and CBDA, to maximize the benefits delivered throughout the body. Anecdotally, many people find CBN supports relaxation better than CBD alone, and have found that when paired together, CBN and CBD can bring a synergistic balance to the endocannabinoid system.
What are the potential benefits of taking CBN?
There have been very few studies and trials due to strict regulations around cannabis. And while more research is needed to fully understand the benefits and impact of CBN on the human body, some initial studies have suggested that CBN can help to support deep physical relaxation which can aid in a restful night of sleep*.
What are the potential risks of taking CBN?
Similar to the benefits of CBN, the risks of CBN are fairly unknown. When changing your habits, especially as it relates to your health, you should always consult your doctor. If you do decide to bring CBN into your daily (or nightly) routine you should be aware that CBN, like many other cannabinoids, can show up on a drug test.
